Week 2-Paper Cubes
Week 2: Objectified Documentary and our Cubes
It may seem that the object you are using may only have one purpose. According to Jonathan Ive (designer at Apple Inc.) one object can have multiple functionalities. I agree with his statement because take a notebook as an example, there are a lot of funtionalities that a notebook can hold. Carrying paper is one of the many functions a notebook can hold because the paper is there when you need it, some notebooks have pockets inside of them so you can store papers/files that way everything is in one location. There are more functions to this notebook, but just with these two funcitons alone you can see that the design behind the notebook has resolved the issue storing and having paper at the same time. Alice Rawthson said "in order to make objects better you need to improve their design". I am in the middle with this claim because advancing at a fast rate so designing better technology will make our lives better. On the other hand, "why fix something if it isn't broken?", if the design of the object is working and it lasts a long time then there is no need to improve it. That is why they need to design something excellent in the first place in order to take the full potential of the object at hand. If it was poorly designed then the object is not going to last long and it will need to redesigned.
Craft: Once the layout of the cube was created we dropped in one of our art pieces and made a clipping mask to get the image to fit in the layout. After we were done printing we had three different utensils to cut the paper with; scissors, X-acto knife or a box cutter. These cutting materials have different accuracy when cutting which is why I went with the X-acto knife to get precise cuts every time. When these were all cut out I used a glue stick to bring them together.
Composition: The images you see below are the cubes we designed, There are three different cubes that have different dimensions. There are two 2"x2"x2" cubes and one 3"x3"x3"inch cube. One of these cubes were hand made by accurately measuring the squares and creating a cube made from graphing paper. The other two cubes were designed using the computer software Adobe Illustrator and printing them using a Xerox printer. We decided to use glossy paper to print these new illustrations. Through Illustrator we were able to accurately do our measurements and have a design on them using our own art to have displayed on the cube.
Concept: Our first week of our 3D-Design class we were learning about shapes, measurements and different design vocabulary. The following week we started to watch a documentary based on the design work behind objects that are in our everyday lives. We normally live our lives and not having to think about the design of the tool that we use and the purpose that object holds.
